Thailand may be a step closer to joining Apple’s global digital payments network after references to the country appeared in Apple’s developer documentation, prompting fresh speculation about a future launch of Apple Pay.
Although Apple has not announced plans to introduce Apple Pay in Thailand, recent changes to official developer resources suggest the company is laying the groundwork for expanding its payment services into the country.
The speculation began after developers spotted Thailand listed among supported regions in Apple’s documentation for Tap to Pay on iPhone. The feature allows businesses to accept contactless payments directly on an iPhone, removing the need for a separate payment terminal. The reference was later removed, but its brief appearance has fuelled expectations that Apple is preparing for a future rollout.
Apple has made no public statement explaining the change.
Apple Pay Still Unavailable in Thailand
Despite the recent discovery, Apple Pay remains unavailable in Thailand.
Apple’s official list of supported countries and regions does not include Thailand, and no Thai bank has announced support for the service.
Apple Pay allows users to store eligible debit and credit cards in the Apple Wallet app and make secure contactless payments using an iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, or Mac. The service is available in more than 90 countries and regions, but Thailand has remained absent despite the country’s widespread adoption of contactless payment technology.
Tap to Pay Could Be the First Step
Industry observers believe Tap to Pay on iPhone may serve as Apple’s entry point into the Thai market.
The merchant focused service enables businesses to accept payments from contactless bank cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and other NFC enabled digital wallets using only an iPhone.
Apple has followed a similar pattern in other markets by expanding merchant payment infrastructure alongside consumer payment services. While this does not confirm an Apple Pay launch, it suggests Apple is continuing work with payment partners in preparation for broader availability.
Strong Digital Payment Market
Thailand has become one of Southeast Asia’s fastest growing cashless economies.
Consumers routinely use QR code payments through PromptPay alongside contactless Visa and Mastercard transactions. International tourists also increasingly expect mobile wallet support during their travels.
The arrival of Apple Pay would provide iPhone users with another payment option while giving visitors the ability to use the same digital wallets they rely on in their home countries.
No Launch Date Yet
For now, there is no official confirmation that Apple Pay will launch in Thailand or when it might become available.
However, the appearance of Thailand in Apple’s own developer documentation is one of the clearest signs yet that the company is actively considering expanding its payment ecosystem into the country.
Until Apple or a participating Thai bank makes a formal announcement, the documents remain an indication of possible future plans rather than confirmation of an imminent launch.
