The Thailand 60-day visa-free entry scheme allows passport holders from 93 countries and territories to enter without a visa for tourism and certain short-term business purposes. The current 60-day stay period took effect on 15 July 2024 as part of a tourism recovery strategy introduced under former Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin of the Pheu Thai Party.
The policy aimed to boost visitor numbers and support economic growth after years of travel disruption. Tourism remains a key sector in Thailand’s economy, supporting millions of jobs nationwide.
Why Officials Are Reviewing the Policy
Foreign Affairs Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow said authorities have identified cases where some foreign nationals used the extended stay for unauthorised work, scams, and other illegal activities.
The caretaker administration, led by Anutin Charnvirakul and the Bhumjaithai Party, has formed a committee to reassess visa policies. In Thailand, a caretaker government remains in office after an election until official results are endorsed and a new cabinet is appointed.

Officials note that most international tourists stay between 15 and 30 days. Based on this data, agencies have discussed reducing the permitted stay to 30 days in principle.
Tourism representatives state that most genuine visitors do not use the full 60-day period. They believe a shorter stay would have a limited impact on standard holiday travel while helping address misuse.
