An American national has been arrested in Pattaya for allegedly attempting to exchange counterfeit U.S. currency for Thai baht, despite clear indications that the banknotes were not legal tender.
Police identified the suspect as 66-year-old Jeffrey Stookey Sr., who was taken into custody near a currency exchange booth on Jomtien Beach Road in Pattaya, a popular seaside destination in Chonburi Province. Officers from the Pattaya City Police Station made the arrest on June 3, after receiving a report from staff at the TT Currency Exchange booth.
According to authorities, Mr. Stookey repeatedly attempted to exchange several $100 U.S. banknotes, which were clearly marked with the words “For Motion Picture Use Only” — a phrase commonly printed on fake bills used as film props. Exchange staff refused the transaction and notified police when the suspect continued to insist on the exchange and became visibly displeased.
During the arrest, police discovered additional counterfeit notes in Mr. Stookey’s possession. In total, officers seized 21 fake $100 bills. He was charged with possessing counterfeit currency with the intent to circulate, fully aware that the money was not genuine.
Investigators reported that Mr. Stookey has been a frequent visitor to Thailand over the past decade. He is married to a Thai woman from the northeastern region, commonly referred to as Isaan, and currently resides on Phra Tamnak Hill, a residential area in Pattaya.
Mr. Stookey remains in custody and is expected to face legal proceedings under Thai law. Authorities have not disclosed whether further charges or investigations are pending.
Thai law takes currency-related offences seriously, especially when foreign nationals are involved. Travellers are advised to ensure that all currency used or exchanged in Thailand is genuine and obtained through reputable sources.
