Police were alerted to the incident at approximately 1:06 a.m., according to officials at Pattaya City Police Station. The shooting took place in a narrow alley linking Walking Street, a well-known entertainment district, to Pattaya Bay. The area sits beneath a popular nightlife venue and is frequented by tourists and local workers.

Emergency responders arrived to find the victim, 41-year-old shop owner Phatthran Jirachokchaikul, with two gunshot wounds to his torso. He was still alive but in critical condition. Rescue teams administered first aid, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, before transporting him to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Police detained a suspect at the scene, identified as a detective assigned to Pattaya City Police Station. His name has not yet been released pending further investigation. Officers recovered his service firearm and ammunition as evidence.

Witnesses reported that the suspect appeared heavily intoxicated and was behaving erratically. He allegedly brandished his weapon and fired shots toward a nearby entertainment venue, though no injuries were reported there. According to witness statements, the victim attempted to defuse the situation by approaching the suspect and urging him to lower his weapon. Despite this, the suspect allegedly fired twice, striking the victim.

The incident occurred during Songkran, Thailand’s traditional New Year festival, which runs in mid-April. In Pattaya, extended celebrations known locally as “Wan Lai” take place, often involving large gatherings, water fights, and increased alcohol consumption.

Senior police officials have ordered a full investigation, including a review of the suspect’s actions, his level of intoxication, and the sequence of events leading to the shooting.

The case has raised concerns among local business owners and visitors about safety in crowded nightlife areas during major festivals. Authorities have stated that further updates will be provided as the investigation continues.
