Phuket MP Calls For Review Of Thailand’s Visa-Free Entry Policy Warning It Fuels Unruly Tourist Behaviour And Harms The Nation’s Reputation.

MP Raises Concerns Over Tourist Behavior

A member of parliament from Phuket has urged the Thai government to reassess the country’s visa-free entry policy, arguing that it encourages unruly tourist behavior and risks damaging Thailand’s reputation abroad.

Chalermpong Saengdee, MP for Phuket, submitted a formal request for the government to review the policy, which allows citizens of several countries to enter Thailand without a visa. He acknowledged that the measure has boosted arrivals and increased revenue but warned that it has also created problems linked to misconduct, illegal activities, and exploitation of local communities.

High-Profile Cases in Phuket

Chalermpong said visa-free access has made it easier for “low-quality tourists” to enter the country. He cited cases reported in local media, including Russians accused of filming adult content in vehicles and a Russian man allegedly dancing naked in Patong after taking psychedelic mushrooms.

He also referred to the BBC documentary Thailand: The Dark Side of Paradise , which highlighted crime, drugs, and exploitation linked to mass tourism in destinations such as Phuket, Pattaya, and Chiang Mai.

Impact on Local Communities

The MP stressed that most visitors contribute positively by supporting hotels, restaurants, and local merchants. However, he warned that visa-free travel has also allowed foreigners to work illegally or run unlicensed businesses. “For these low-quality tourists, the damage far outweighs the benefits,” he said.

Call for Stricter Entry Measures

Chalermpong urged Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s government to introduce stricter entry measures to screen tourists more effectively. He argued this would safeguard Thailand’s long-term interests, balancing economic growth with the need to protect local livelihoods and the nation’s reputation.

Tourism’s Central Role in Thailand

Tourism is one of Thailand’s most important economic drivers. Phuket remains a leading destination for millions of holidaymakers, digital nomads, and long-stay expats. Any changes to visa-free entry would affect both the tourism sector and the wider expatriate community.

Debate Over Tourism Policy

The proposal highlights the ongoing debate about how Thailand should manage tourism after the pandemic. While the government continues to promote policies that attract high visitor numbers, local representatives are pressing for measures that emphasize quality control and responsible tourism management.
