Thailand to Offer 200,000 Free Domestic Flights for Tourists in 2025

Thailand is preparing to launch a major tourism campaign offering 200,000 free domestic flights to international tourists between September and November 2025. The initiative aims to encourage visitors to explore beyond popular destinations such as Bangkok, Phuket, and Chiang Mai.

The program, titled “Buy International, Get Free Thai Domestic Flights,” still awaits cabinet approval and depends on a 700-million-baht budget (about USD 19 million). If approved, the Tourism and Sports Ministry estimates it could generate up to 8.8 billion baht (USD 238 million) in tourism revenue, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

How the Free Flights Scheme Works

International tourists flying into Thailand will be eligible for one free domestic round trip with a 20-kilogram baggage allowance. The offer will cover six airlines, including Thai Airways ,Bangkok Airways , and Thai AirAsia . Bookings must be made directly with the airlines or through approved travel agents.

Industry Response and Regional Impact

Tourism experts have welcomed the scheme but caution that its impact may vary across regions. Punlop Saejew, vice president of the Chiang Mai Chamber of Commerce, suggested the initiative could be more effective during Thailand’s off-peak seasons. He also noted that high domestic airfares continue to limit travel within the country and suggested government subsidies as a long-term fix.

The Isan region in northeastern Thailand, which includes provinces such as Buri Ram and Ubon Ratchathani, may see limited benefit. Although both cities are connected to Bangkok by domestic flights, they are less established on the international tourist trail. Rungroj Santadvanit of the Thai Hotels Association recommended promoting Buri Ram as a sports tourism hub (home to Buriram United Football Club and Chang International Circuit) and highlighting Ubon Ratchathani’s Mekong River attractions to draw more visitors.

He also stressed the importance of clear safety communication, particularly given ongoing border tensions with Cambodia. For northern and southern provinces, tourism experts advised creating tailored campaigns to attract markets such as Australia, New Zealand, and Scandinavia, where travelers often seek cultural and adventure-focused experiences.

Tourism Trends in 2025

As of mid-August 2025, Thailand recorded 20.8 million foreign arrivals, down 7% compared with the same period last year. China remains the largest source of visitors, with 2.9 million arrivals so far this year, according to the Bangkok Post .

If approved, the free flight campaign could play a key role in boosting Thailand tourism 2025, encouraging international visitors to discover more of the country’s hidden destinations beyond the well-known hotspots.
